The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking two Athletic Field Senior Equipment Operators to work within Montgomery County Department of Parks, Southern Parks Division, Cabin John Maintenance.  The department serves a diverse population of over one million residents in Montgomery County, Maryland, and manages 419 parks on more than 37,000 acres of parkland.  The Department has an annual operating budget of over $100 million, a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $180 million, and a career staff of nearly 800 employees.

Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County.  Its mission is to provide users with choices of active and passive recreation in parks and facilities that are safe and well-managed; and to apply best practices of stormwater management and stewardship for both undeveloped land, and our build resources located within the natural environment.
Athletic equipment operators analyze situations, and exercise judgment to best complete project tasks; extremely unusual situations or challenges are reported to the supervisor. This position will possess the ability to evaluate present on-site grading and develop plans to increase positive drainage while matching surrounding existing grades. Incumbents may provide direction to lead the work of team leaders or related team members engaged in project work. Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position will be required to work both the Southern and Northern Regions.  This position is based out of Cabin John. 
 Examples of Important Duties:
  • Responsibilities include advanced skills and knowledge in heavy equipment operations including but not limited to skid steers, front end loaders, precision laser graders, top-dressers, advanced aerification equipment, large and small tractor controls and function.
  • On-site minor repairs and inspections equipment which will require advanced knowledge of specialized machinery operations.
  • Ability to understand laser transit operations, solve complex issues with advance laser technology, and modify grades to match previous drainage.
  • Plans work, an extreme attention to detail in daily activities to ensure successful projects and writing reports and instructions
  • Manages area operation staff
  • Must have excellent communication skills to respond to both external and internal inquires and provide training and technical instructions as needed.
  • Inspect and approve materials, install approved materials to very specific specifications with advanced techniques used in the athletic field renovation and construction industry.
  • Provides advanced equipment operation to improve soil and turf grass quality on athletic fields.
  • The ability to work independently or with a crew to improve athletic surface conditions for turf users.
  • Must perform and make analytical decisions about moisture levels on a daily basis to modify the current project plans.
  • Skilled working with large heavy specialty soil and turf grass improvement equipment with complex operations to improve infiltration rates, drainage, soil health, turf grass quality and safety of the fields.
  • Equipment will include but not limited to: large area power take-off soil de-compaction equipment, skid steers, top-dressers, vegetation removal equipment, and complex nutrient modification machinery.
  • Must operate large trucks with trailers to mobilize equipment onsite daily that require a CDL Class A license to construct, renovation, and improve maintenance on athletic fields.
Will work with Park Development and Design, Facilities Management Division, Specialized athletic field contractors
 Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED, and
2. Three years of equipment operation, including a minimum of one year of experience using heavy equipment; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at time of employment.
5. Successfully pass Commission medical examination.
